Something to look at in 2013

I am amazed at the fact that we can look at our inmate population in our prisons which was

        174,000 in 1972    and   1,400,000 in 2010

 and feel good because the population in Michigan went down by .03% in 2010.  We have 15% of the population of Michigan incarcerated in U.S. prisons.  Let's look at the factors contributing to this mega distortion, 758% increase in overall population in  a 38 year period, and take some positive action to solve this growing problem!!!!  .03% just is not cutting it given that we have a 45-50% recidivism rate in Michigan.  Is it our education system, drugs, gangs, our justice system?  What ever it is, it has to be corrected....  See the following article

Efficient Minds may cause Distorted Thinking

Certainly each of us strives for efficiency.  We were, most of us anyway, brought up with the early understanding, "time is money".  Each of us followed that quote, some religiously.  Every decision we made had to be timely.  Yet, as we look back, how many of those timely decisions created some ineffective outcome?  To often we forget to look at the people being effected and how they are effected. To often we look at the short term gain versus the long term affect of our timely decision.

A simple example:  we believe that it is inefficient (cost wise) to establish early childhood development programs for preschool children.  These costs, infrastructure, teachers, and additional costs are much to great to be considered efficient.

Now let's look at the effectiveness of our decision;  Our prisons population consists of people who;

     40% do not have a high school diploma
     40-65% are functionally illiterate meaning "they lack the skills necessary to read and understand a newspaper, balance a checkbook, or fill out an application for a job."
     On average they read at the seventh-grade level.
     25-50% have symptoms of a learning disability
     On average their IQ score id 14 points below the national average, and about 15 percent score low enough on IQ tests to be identified as mentally retarded.

So, what is the cost of our efficiency?  I am sorry, I have to get to work on my other projects, remember, "time is Money!"

Let's look quickly at Penn State University.  Here is an excellent case study in how a culture (football is Penn State) can be used to rationalize unethical decision making.  I am sure that rational discussions took place among people at the highest levels about the impact of what would happen to the Penn State football program (culture), if a story of the magnitude of Jerry Sandusky were published.  The cost to the University would be in the millions and so let's decide, millions of lost dollars or take a wait and see approach?  I'm sure at the time it souded like such an easy (unethical but easy) choice!

A very interesting article.  Is it all about "education" as the comment from Natascha indicates or is it about individual learning?  Not only in 'higher education', but in "K12 education", also.  Why can't we call it K12 learning and Higher learning?  Why does it have to be education, by the way check out the word educations Latin derivative....

Geri is working extremly hard on completing her work on ICD-10 conversion for a large company.  Very stressful work, but her experience is exceptional.
